20 New Years Resolutions For Millennials

Before you start reading this, I just have to say one thing....I hate using the phrase, 'New Years Resolution.' Why? Because nobody will be the perfect version of themselves for 365 days straight. It's impossible.

So instead, we're actualllllly bringing you, "20 Healthy Habits" Millennials should try and take on in 2017.

 

 

 

 

1. BECOME MORE OF A MINIMALIST

There are seriously a million benefits of being a minimalist -- increased mental/emotional clarity, reduced stress, more money, increased productivity, increased happiness, etc etc. By nature, people generally think the more they have, the better they'll feel about themselves. Truth in some cases yes (like more $$$ in the bank) buttt you can actually get much more with owning much less and that's a fact.

2. MEDITATE

If you haven't caught onto the calming-craze of mindfulness yet, the practice of meditation is actually the greatest and easiest thing you can do for your mind, body, and soul. Meditating practically saved me from becoming a work-obsessed psychopath last year. I got really into the practice of meditating through the app Headspace because it's super easy for anyone to follow and I'm not getting paid to say that either. As someone who  n-e-v-e-r  thought she could turn her brain off, I was blown away from how good I felt after taking 10 mins to just breathe. I got so obsessed with meditating last year that I even solicited a flyer I had initially made for my own personal use (a reminder of the health benefits to go on top of my fridge) at one of our biggest SEV Cities events.

3. BE PRESENT

We are ALL guilty of staring down at our phones when we're hanging out with other people. Make it a point to engage more with others this year. Break the bad habit by reminding yourself  that people > pixels (it works!)

 

 

 

4. READ MORE BOOKS

What do the richest people in the world all have in common? They all read. When Warren Buffett was once asked about the key to success, he pointed to a stack of nearby books and said, “Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.”  Warren Buffet is worth 73 billion dollars. Take his advice.

 

 

 

5. STOP TALKING SHIT

About yourself and others. Talking shit is trash so toss this bad habit out once and for all.

6. BE AUTHENTIC

Show yourself off. It's a privilege of a lifetime to be who you really are.

7. DROP DRUNK MUNCHIES

Enlist in your squad to help prevent you from stopping at jumbo slice on your way home from the bars. If breaking this bad habit becomes a group effort, it’ll be much easier to kick it once in for all.

8. STRETTTTTTTTTTTTTTCCCCCCHHH

If you're trying to kick off the new year by making resolutions to become healthier, don't forget to add stretching to your list too. Loss of flexibility can lead to injury, disability, and put you in a rut feeling less active overall.  Flexibility declines as we get older and since our muscles get stiffer with age, not stretching is no bueno for our bodies.

9. PERFECT YOUR POSTURE

Your mom was right for nagging you about your bad posture growing up. Posture = POWER.  According to Amy Cuddy’s now infamous TED Talk on power posing, across all species, posture is often the primary representation of power. People with high power poses have increased feelings of confidence, a better looking abdominal area, and less anxiety. So the next time you catch yourself slouching, think string. Imagine that a string is coming out from the top of your head and is pulling you gently up towards the ceiling. 

 

 

 

10. INVEST IN YOUR SKIN

Get a facial, book yourself a massage, or "if you're broke" just simply wash your face every morning & night with a good cleanser. Taking care of your skin means less fine lines and wrinkles later on....so treat yo self!

11. CUT DOWN ON BEEF

Or cut it out completely. This has nothing to with health reasons either, beef is just really, really, reallllly bad for the environment.

12. INCREASE YOUR KINDNESS

We're not saying you need to be throwing confetti in the air on your way to grab coffee (even though that would be pretty dope of you to do) just don't be a d**k head. It's that simple. Try and keep controversial conversations to a minimum. Be nice to people you encounter everyday. Always say please and thank you. 

 

 

 

13. SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY

Your parents aren't getting any younger, go hangout with them more often and when you do see them, put your phone away.   

 

 

 

14. KEEP IN TOUCH

Everyones busy, so don't use, "I'm so busy" as an excuse not to call your friends back. Follow through with plans. Don't be flakey. Show up and be a good friend.

15. TRAVEL

Vacationing doesn't get easier after you start popping out babies. You're young right now, plan a trip with your pals.  Use Hipmunk to look up travel packages, subscribe to Airfarewatchdog's newsletter to get alerts about cheap airfare prices, and take a peek at what specials WOW Air is currently offering....they're insane.

 

 

 

 

16. HAVE A HOBBY

Or make up a new one.

Examples of new, cool & helpful hobbies: Learn a new language, take a cooking class, brew your own beer, volunteer, take a creative/ crafty new class. 

 

 

 

 

17. HELP PEOPLE

You can learn a lot about yourself and others from helping someone else. Nobody forgets about the person that helped them out either.

 

 

 

 

18. CUT OUT TOXIC PEOPLE

Either ya let go or ya get dragged, that choice is entirely up to you.

19. PUT YOUR HAPPINESS FIRST

Make 2017 the best damn year YOU have ever had with YOU. Be nice to yourself. Stop comparing yourself to other people. Document the moments you feel most in love with your life. What you're wearing, who you're with, what you're doing, how you're feeling. Make note of all those things, recreate them, and repeat.

 

 

 

 

 

20. AND LASTLY, IF YOU HATE YOUR JOB....

Quit. You'll find better work to do for the rest of your life.
